Trans-Saharan Conference

Umaru Musa Yar'Adua University, Katsina, Nigeria

November 27 - 29, 2017

This conference, which took place on November 27-29, 2017 in the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua University, Katsina, sought to raise preliminary and fundamental questions regarding the slave trade that occurred between Africa and Arabian Peninsula through the Sahara, the Mediterranean Sea and the Indian Ocean. It attempted to examine in a more systematic and empirical way the “other” slave trade; by analysing both the indigenous African and Arabian/Islamic cultural contexts within which the Trans-Atlantic slave trade took place.  This conference was attended and supported by members of the SSHRC project, SHADD Biography Project: Testimonies of West Africans from the Era of the Slave Trade.
